*I had an interesting learning experience with this painting. Due to the audience that it was directed towards, the original painting was intense and raw, (which can usually be a characteristic for my paintings). However, because of the mental and emotional state of the audience, the painting was verging on upsetting and maybe even dangerous. So I had the unique opportunity to revisit this real, raw, and crazy painting with the purpose in mind to transform it. At first, I completely covered up the original with a painting of a personal place of peace. But, it didn't seem right to completely hide the rawness of the original, so after scraping it off and continuing to work it out, I found resolution in (round 2) and title it, "Hope in Reality."

Part of my painting process includes layers and layers and layers of paint, text, imagery, and individual paintings in and of themselves. I think these paintings are about halfway done, or maybe not even.

Part of my process is making beautiful things, and then covering them up with another layer, that could be ugly (heaven forbid), all for the gestalt (one of my favorite art terms) of the entire painting. I have never photographed paintings in their beginning stages, but I thought it might be helpful/ interesting to look back on when the paintings are finished.

Now give these photos some slack... they were taken with my phone, which now has paint smudges on it. The photos are rudimentary at best, but the paintings are making progress.

artist statement

The process of making these paintings is important in connection to the concepts behind them. I make them by using a combination of glazing, stamping, painting, drawing, handwriting, transferring, sanding, and layering. I use this process to come up with images and surfaces of color and shape. I use many different tools, sometimes unconventional, that I find can echo the shapes, colors, and subtleties that I see around me. I am interested in a play between structure and chaos, intuition and preparation, landscape and memory, texture and color, drawing and painting, and spontaneity and order. Through painting, I literally explore each of these ideas every day as I enter my studio.

In combination with an investigation of these concepts, my paintings have strong ties to events from my memory and daily life. They are an exploration of painting and experience surrounded by a community of ideas and people. My fascinations with the subtleties of my environment, along with the physicality of the paint, drive me to make paintings. Details of the landscapes I see, as well as intricacies of people and relationships, inform my paintings. Each painting is a personal communication of a place and a memory, veiled by the formal aspects of painting and process.
